2026 SEA Expedition Scholarship

Egan Maritime Institute and Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole have partnered to offer a full scholarship for one Nantucket High School student to participate in SEA’s High School Expedition program from July 16-27 or from Aug. 3-14, 2026. During this immersive offshore program, you will sail aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer in Cape Cod Bay and the Gulf of Maine, serving as crew and conducting scientific research. No previous sailing experience is necessary.

Learn more about the SEA High School Expedition program on its webpage here. You can also read about the experience of the previous Egan SEA Scholarship recipient here.

You are encouraged (but not required) to attend a Zoom information session with SEA staff and an Egan educator on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 5-5:30 p.m. This meeting is just for Nantucket students and will include a short presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. You can join the meeting here.

The application deadline for the scholarship is Friday, Feb. 13, at the end of the school day. CLICK HERE FOR THE APPLICATION

Egan Maritime will work with advisors from Nantucket Public Schools to review applications before nominating a student for the scholarship. Once nominated, the student must follow SEA’s admissions policies and procedures, including submitting an application to SEA and completing an interview with SEA staff. An Egan educator is available to provide support throughout this process.

Scholarship Selection Criteria

The selection committee will consider the following criteria when reviewing applicants:

  • Interest in pursuing post-secondary education and/or a career in maritime studies or ocean science
  • Prior experience with Egan Maritime Institute’s educational programs
  • Class year — preference will be given to current sophomores, juniors and seniors. However, all enrolled Nantucket High School students are invited to apply for this scholarship.
  • Financial need

Tall Ship Lynx Summer 2026 Sails

Students this summer have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the Tall Ship Lynx as it takes part in maritime events commemorating the 250th anniversary of America's founding.

Egan Maritime Institute and the Lynx Educational Foundation have teamed up to offer two multi-day programs during Sail250, an international gathering of tall ships and military vessels:

  1. For students currently in grades 9-12 only: Sail aboard the Lynx in Baltimore from June 24-29 during Sail250 Maryland
  2. For students currently in grades 8-12: Sail aboard the Lynx in Boston from July 10-12 during Sail Boston

Students may apply below for either trip (or both, if eligible). These trips offer students the chance to:

  • Sail alongside an international fleet of tall ships, historic vessels, and modern military ships.
  • Participate in nationally broadcast maritime parades.
  • Tour visiting vessels and meet crew members from around the world while learning about maritime history.

As always on Lynx sails, students will become part of the crew for the duration of the trip, sharing shipboard responsibilities and receiving mentorship from professional mariners.

Both trips are free to participants, including transportation to and from Baltimore and Boston. An Egan staff member will accompany students while traveling as well as on board the Lynx.

To apply, please complete an application by Friday, March 27. We encourage high schoolers with previous on-the-water or dockside experience to apply for the program in Baltimore; all students in grades 8-12 are welcome to apply to the program in Boston, with no prior sailing experience necessary. Students selected to join a voyage will be notified by Friday, April 10. LINK TO APPLICATION.

Before submitting an application, please confirm that no prior obligations (e.g. summer jobs, family commitments, vacation plans) will prevent you from committing to the full length of the trip.

After you have submitted this Google form, you and your parent/guardian will be emailed an Application Waiver Consent via DocuSign. Please fill out and sign this form in its entirety. Note that we cannot accept your application without signed consent from you and your parent/guardian.
