Through a unique partnership with The Lynx Education Fund and the support of dedicated donors, Tall Ship experiences are available each summer to Nantucket youth. Over 4 sails in July and August, Egan Maritime will send 25 local Nantucket middle school and high school students on 3-day or 7-day sails aboard Tall Ship Lynx. The youth, known as Student Mariners, work with the crew and learn the ropes while on their journeys. Throughout their sails Student Mariners learn teamwork, how to problem solve in unpredictable circumstances, and how to overcome nervousness and fear to foster a vigorous sense of self.
The first group of Student Mariners set sail on Saturday, July 8 and returned to Nantucket on Monday, July 10. While aboard they learned the theory behind sailing; had a spirited knot tying lesson; climbed a loft and worked on small boat skills; found a festival while on land at the Vineyard; fished; swam; and came back to Nantucket full of memories, confidence, and newly forged friendships.
