The Nantucket Cyrus Pierce Middle School 8th grade Sea of Opportunities oceanography students are wrapping up their academic year with a special assignment from Dr. Amanda Knight Bardsley: how do we solve the problem of too much plastic polluting and affecting our oceans?

Working in groups of four, students are designing and producing their own solutions to the problem of too much plastic in waterways. From public service media campaigns to upcycled plastic fashions, and even a method and machine for melting and molding plastic to create utilitarian items, Dr. Bardsley and her students are seeking creative island solutions to confront a growing global issue.

Students will share their projects with the public on June 12, 2017, at 6:00pm at the Cyrus Pierce Middle School, 10 Surfside Road, lobby and cafeteria. All Egan Maritime members, patrons, and friends, are invited to attend.

Our Sea of Opportunities maritime education program would not be possible without the support of dedicated donors who believe in the power of education to cultivate a maritime workforce for tomorrow. There are 150 students in the 2016/2017 Sea of Opportunities classrooms, and it costs $1,500 per student per school year to ensure all will find success and inspiration through experiential maritime learning.
