Aquaculture on Nantucket

Egan Maritime Institute and the Shellfish Association present a Regional Aquaculture Symposium.

Egan Maritime and the Nantucket Shellfish Association are collaborating to present a Regional Aquaculture Symposium. Attendees are invited to learn how our regional waterfronts have shifted to promote local seafaring due to changes in wild-caught fisheries.

The event will include a panel featuring experts from Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Cape Cod. Attendees will learn how each region addresses aquaculture and how each region’s waterfront can be similar yet very different when it comes to aquaculture. Renee Ceely and Sierra Gray will moderate the panel. “Renee’s late husband Martin was one of the first oyster farmers on Nantucket; her historical knowledge will be an excellent complement to the panel, which includes aquaculturists, scientists, and advocates. This is a real mission moment and opportunity for us, as Egan Maritime aims to intertwine stories of the past into our everyday work,” shares Executive Director Carlisle Jensen.

After the panel, guests are invited to the Museum's grounds to learn more from local organizations, regional guests, and local aquaculturists. This is an excellent opportunity to ask more in-depth questions and learn more about how organizations like the Land and Water Council and Nantucket Conservation Foundation are working to address harbor health and research innovative ways to boost aquaculture on Nantucket. “As an organization, Egan Maritime works to promote and preserve our Island’s maritime history. We are pleased to work with the Shellfish Association to discuss an important but lesser-known aspect of maritime history and how it informs how we as a community can protect Nantucket’s harbors, water quality, and shellfish resources,” Jensen continues. “Plus, this will be a great community event at a beautiful location.”

Light bites and refreshments will be served. Please visit eganmaritime.org to register for this program. Egan Maritime members and members of all partner organizations working on this event will receive a special discount on admission.
