Museum Speaker Series

Evenings At The Museum

This fall, join us for a series of lectures focused on the 2022 Featured Exhibition: Gallant Guardians: The Nantucket Lightships. Each week, we will host a different expert who will expand upon the exhibit and share their expertise with the audience.

The first lecture on Thursday, August 25th will feature Karen Butler, author and chronicler of the history of Nantucket Island’s lighthouses and lightships, will present a history of the Nantucket Lightship basket and how and why the craftsmanship evolved among the crews stationed along the Nantucket shoals.

The September 15th speaker will be Robert M. Mannino, president of Boston’s United States Lightship Museum LV-112. As the leader of what is widely recognized as the finest example of an institution honoring the lightships, Bob brings expertise and a perspective that will delight and engage our members and friends. We invite all to attend Bob’s lecture to hear him share his research and successful activities to preserve an essential part of the U.S. Coast Guard’s history.

Our second speaker will be law student and maritime law expert, Catherine Rockett. On September 8, 2022, Ms. Rockett will present the results of her research on legal issues surrounding the ownership of the wreckage of the Nantucket Lightship #117 that sank off Nantucket after being rammed by the RMS Olympic in May 1934.

All lectures will be from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum. General Admission:$15, EMI Members: $12. To purchase your tickets or additional information, call (508) 228 2505, or visit www.eganmaritime.org.
