Nantucket High School (NHS) and the Egan Maritime Institute are thrilled to announce an exciting science opportunity for local students. This November 16th -19th Egan and the NHS will bring students to the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, to participate in a hands-on science immersion program.
This unique three-day course—designed specifically for Nantucket students—will give participants the chance to explore CRISPR gene editing and marine biology through interactive experiments and direct engagement with MBL researchers.
“At Egan Maritime, our educational programs provide diverse, hands-on learning opportunities for Nantucket students at every stage of their academic journey. This is an example of the work we do beyond the classroom to cultivate the next generation of maritime and science professionals, shares Carlisle Jensen, Executive Director, Egan Maritime Institute
The experience at MBL is truly exceptional. Through its renowned High School Science Discovery Program, students are immersed in active research environments typically reserved for advanced learners. They will work alongside scientists using state-of-the-art laboratory and field techniques. The residential nature of the program allows students to live on campus, attend lectures, and participate in field and lab work each day while engaging in evening discussions and career panels within MBL’s vibrant scientific community.
“The partnership with Egan Maritime has provided many opportunities for our students to engage in applied learning in the field of marine science. We are extremely fortunate to have the generous support of Egan Maritime, whose partnership greatly enriches our students’ learning experiences.” States, Mandy Hileman, Principal of Nantucket High School.
The program is free and open to Nantucket High School sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have completed an introductory biology course.
Interested students must complete the application form by the end of the day on Friday, October 31. Please note that all students must submit this application, even if they filled out an interest survey earlier this fall.
