Egan Maritime Institute and SEA Education Association (SEA) are excited to announce a full-ride scholarship for one Nantucket High School student to participate in SEA's prestigious High School Expedition program.
This collaboration provides a unique, life-changing educational experience. SEA’s programs feature transformative sea voyages emphasizing scientific discovery, academic rigor, and personal growth. Participants engage in an interdisciplinary curriculum and develop leadership skills through hands-on experiences aboard tall ships and onshore.
"At Egan Maritime Institute, we are committed to preserving and promoting Nantucket's maritime heritage through community education," said Carlisle Jensen, Executive Director of Egan Maritime Institute. "This scholarship extends maritime learning opportunities to Nantucket High School students, supporting their educational journeys while fostering the next generation of maritime leaders."
Since 1971, SEA Education Association has offered immersive educational programs, preparing over 10,000 alumni for maritime-related careers. Through this scholarship, Egan Maritime and SEA aim to inspire more students from Nantucket, Cape Cod, and the Islands to explore and pursue maritime education and careers.
“SEA is thrilled to partner with Egan Maritime Institute to offer this opportunity to a Nantucket High School student,” said SEA President Rick Hopper. "Our programs are grounded in the transformative power of experiential education, and this scholarship reflects our commitment to making such life-changing experiences accessible to all. We look forward to welcoming a scholarship student from Nantucket aboard SEA Expedition this summer."
Egan Maritime will collaborate with a select group of advisors from Nantucket Public Schools to review applications and nominate a student for the scholarship. The nominated student will then complete SEA’s admissions process with continued support from Egan Maritime throughout the application journey. SEA Expedition is a two-week offshore program for rising tenth through 12th graders and recent high school graduates. The scholarship covers the program's full cost, currently $6,400.
"We encourage students who have participated in Egan's programs, whether in the classroom or aboard the Lynx, to apply and broaden their horizons through an intensive offshore sailing and oceanographic expedition," Jensen added. "This hands-on experience will give Nantucket students the skills and knowledge to contribute to the future maritime workforce."
Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
• Interest in pursuing post-secondary education in maritime studies
• Experience with Egan Maritime Institute’s on-the-water educational programs
• All currently enrolled Nantucket High School students are invited to apply; however, preference will be given to current sophomores, juniors, and seniors
• Financial need
The selection process will adhere to SEA’s admissions policies and procedures.
Applications are available on Egan Maritime Institute’s website and social media pages. The deadline for submission is March 10, 2025, at 5:00 PM. For more information, please get in touch with Carlisle Jensen, Executive Director of Egan Maritime Institute.
About SEA Education Association
SEA Education Association is a global leader in experiential maritime education, offering programs that combine oceanographic research, leadership training, and hands-on sailing experiences to prepare students for careers in the maritime and environmental fields.
SEA Expedition is a two-week offshore summer program for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as well as recent high school graduates.
Immersed into the daily life of SEA’s SSV Corwith Cramer, SEA Expedition provides students the opportunity to participate in every aspect of a challenging offshore sailing and oceanographic expedition. While sailing around the nearshore and offshore waters of Cape Cod and New England, students will gain skills navigations and sail handling while also conducting scientific deployments. Past SEA Expedition voyages have explored Cape Cod Bay, Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, the Gulf of Maine, and George’s Bank (at the edge of the continental shelf).
